The Weekend to End Breast Cancer

I've had alot of people emailing me asking if Smiling Eyes will be putting in a team again this year.

This year the run falls on my 10 year anniversary weekend October the 5th. (Anni is the 3rd, babe lol) Needless to say we will be celebrating the fact that we have made it this far in this day in age. Go team Chris and Rich!! Love you honey!

So in lou of the fact that I will not be able to make the run Click Photography will be donating 10%of sales from all photo shoots done in the months of September and October.

If interested in booking a portrait shoot I only have 6 spaces available for those two month so email early if interested.

Thanks again to everyone for your continued interest and support with Smiling Eyes!

Mikayla's Smiling Eyes

Another Smiling Eyes shoot by Sandra Regier. Sandra met 15 month old and smart as a whip, Mikayla.

Tonight I had the pleasure of meeting little Mikayla. At 15 months old she has quite a vocabulary and a fabulous smile! More than once she offered me a flower to smell. The love inside her melted my heart. Mikaya was diagnosed in January with Retinoblastoma which is a cancer that causes tumors in her eyes. It only affects 25 children in Canada each year. She has completed her 12 weeks of chemotherapy and now will have some laser therapy treatments.

Rowell Photography for Smiling Eyes

Here is a recent shoot from the amazing team at Rowell Photography for Smiling Eyes. Check out there post below!

A few months ago we (Rowell Photography) were asked to be apart of a really special group of photographers called Smiling Eyes. Smiling Eyes is a non-profit group of photogs who lend their services to people fighting cancer or who are celebrating beating the disease.

We got a call from the Nardi family asking us to visit them at the Toronto Ronald McDonald house to photograph Kyle and the family.  Kyle is 4 years old and like most 4 year olds he loves hanging out with his brothers and baby sister, playing games, and turning invisible at the drop of a hat. Here are some of our favorites shots from our time with the Nardi Family.

At first Kyle was pretty shy, but we can’t blame him we were in the small games room at Ronald McDonald house and there were 8 of us packed in there, there was no way of being discreet. But Kyle did flash us a quick smile before he turned invisible.

Kyle and mom

Kyle kicking butt at Fuzball

This photo was taken of Kyle when he was invisible, he was convinced cameras couldn’t see him, but these photos prove that cameras can see invisible kids!

This one is our personal fave.

We would like to thank the Nardi family for inviting us over to the House, we hope to photograph you guys all again soon when you go back to your Home!

Books!

I just had to share with you a photo from last week when Smiling Eyes donated $600.00 worth of Usborne Books to the Children's Oncology Unit of Grand River Hospital.

What a great feeling that was!!

Mary the Child Life Specialist in the photo has already emailed me to share that the books have already been very helpful to the children.   "Especially a joke book to a little girl who was having a particularly rough day."

Thanks Mary, for sharing that. That is exactly why Smiling Eyes did it!Books

The Little things.....

I donate to the Canadian Cancer Society regularly and have founded Smiling Eyes but its also the little things that make a difference in someones day.

Book have always been a passion of mine. I love to read.

I was asked to host an Usborne Book party back in January. Well, I decided that my household has enough books to start its own library, so I thought it would be a great idea to turn it into a fundraiser and raise books for the Children's Oncology Unit at our local Hospital . Grand River.

A huge surprise to me when we were able to raise close to $600.00 worth of books!! Books from newborn to teenager!

We received all of them last week and we will be delivering them to the Hospital on Tuesday!

These brand new amazing books will be handed out to all the oncology kids while there for treatment  or check ups to have and keep

A HUGE THANK YOU BELOW TO ALL OF YOU WHO HELPED MAKE SOMEONES DAY A LITTLE BRIGHTER!Books

Smiling Eyes making memories for families living with cancer

“Cancer makes you realize how important family is,”

By Gerard Creces
Signal-Star Staff
Wednesday November 14, 2007

“Cancer makes you realize how important family is,” said Erin Samuell of Simple Photo in Goderich. “As a photographer, I am able to put that into a very tangible light.”
Samuell and fellow photographer Sandra Regier of Zurich are Huron County’s additions to the Smiling Eyes team - a project where photographers provide their services free of charge to those battling cancer.
“Basically what we do is go out and do a family photo session for a family recovering from or living with cancer,” she said. “We’re the two Huron County ones... so far.”
Smiling Eyes began in November of 2006, when founder Christine Kufske provided a neighbour with a complimentary photo session prior to her chemotherapy - a gesture that was graciously accepted.
The idea took wings and Kufske began doing non-profit shoots for others who were suffering from the disease. In a very short time, demand was high enough that the call was placed for other photographers to donate their time for a noble cause.
“Chris is a good friend of mine and that’s where I heard about it,” said Samuel. “It was a good opportunity to use my photography skills and to give back to the community.”
Regier said she decided to get involved because of a personal interest. She said she learned first-hand of the loss and regret associated with cancer with the passing of her aunt two years ago.
“We didn’t have a single picture of her,” said Regier. “I felt bad because we hadn’t taken the time for it.”
She said while there are families who could take advantage of the service, they may not always be comfortable asking for something like a photo shoot, due to the sensitivity and serious nature of their situations.
However, she said as part of Smiling Eyes, it’s their mandate to provide the opportunity to capture a cherishable family moment on film as a way to make the most out of a tough time.
“As we sign on to join the organization, we also volunteered to do two photo sessions per month,” said Regier.
However, as Smiling Eyes is still a relatively new entity, both photographers are trying to spread the word as much as possible.
“There is no set criteria,” said Samuell. “It’s anyone that would like to participate. It’s the whole family going through the process, not just the person afflicted.”
She said that while many of Kufske’s clients have been closer to the end stages of their battles with cancer, the photo sessions are open to anyone who has been touched by it.
“It’s an important time to embrace your family,” she said.
Both photographers say the best way to set something up is to contact them directly, though friends are welcome to nominate people they feel would benefit from the photo shoot.
“The point I want to get out is that I’m available,” said Samuell. “Sandra and I are just eager to get started.”
They are also eager to answer any questions people may have about Smiling Eyes.
“If they just want more information just please give me a call. I’d be more than happy to just discuss the opportunity,” said Regier. “If you have a family member you’d like to refer that would be great.”
However, should the project take off in Huron County, there are always opportunities for more volunteers, both photographers said.
This past weekend, Regier held her first Smiling Eyes session in Zurich.
“It went really good. It had been almost 10 years since they had a family picture taken,” said Regier. “I think they have photos that will be cherished for years.”
For those interested in learning more, the Smiling Eyes blog can be found at: clickphoto.typepad.com/smilin_eyes/. To book your photo session, Samuell can be contacted through her Web site at www.simplephoto.ca or by calling (519) 440-1295. My girlfriend Helen and her husband Kyle gave birth to Liam a beautiful blue eyed little boy , 3 years ago.  Little did they know that he would be diagnosed with stage 4 Neroblastoma at 3 months of age.

Liam went thru numerous surgeries and tests. There were many sleepless nights for all members of the family.

Running around laughing and being a typical 3 year old boy, you would  never know that he had to fight such a battle!  He's now healthy and happy and has fought this ugly disease.

You are right bud, Cancer does SUCK!
